What is the difference between an air pump and filter?
Should I get a air pump for my tank along with the filter?
An air pump is basically a pump that sends air through a tube and into your tank, small bubbles are created from this process and they help spread oxygen in your tanks water. Without the aeration that it provides your water would become stale and your fish would eventually suffocate from lack of oxygen in the water.
Filters, are machines that run the water in your tank through a mesh bag filled with charcoal, the charcoal sucks in harmful chemicals in the water and purifies it. A filter does also aerate your tank because water splashes into the tank causing the water to move and circulate. This helps get air into your tank as well. I'm not sure whether an air pump actually really aerates your tank more than a filter can.
Anyways to whether you should get any of them I'd say it depends on the fish and the size of the tank. Some fish, like bettas don't need air pump or aeration at all becaus the water they naturally live in is stale and they've developed ways of surviving it. While fish like goldfish, need large amounts of oxygen to keep them going. I'd definitely go with at least one of these, the filter first if only one.
I've found no use for an air pump in my tank, it just stresses my fish out and my fish are small enough that they don't consume much oxygen. I also have live plants in my tank which produce oxygen, though I believe I've read somewhere that they can release CO2 at night which defeats the purpose of releasing O2 in the morning :/
Anyways, it just depends on what you think your fish fit into. Most people manage perfectly fine with a good filter. Extra oxygen is always a good thing, but not if it's going to stress your fish out. When buying an air pump make sure you get the right size pump and the right size air stone.
