Looking for a replacement (sealed) headset, which one is best?
I have a 2008 Specialized Tricross Sport, and I'm sure the headset is gone (if I tighten it it feels cog-wheely, and if I don't it feels pretty unsafe) The original according to the specs is a "Specialized Mindset 1 1/8" integrated threadless cartridge sealed bearings. Alloy 20mm cone with on 10mm and two 5mm alloy spacers." -- I'm comfortable looking for the replacement 1 1/8" replacement, but what's the business about the spacers?
Chris King headsets are the best. They are not cheap. You need a 1 1/8 threadless headset. I'm not sure that you need a new one though. I don't know what you mean by cog-wheely, and I'm not sure what you are tightening. If you have dis-assembled your headset you should clean, and grease it with some nice waterproof grease. You then put the stem on, and then the stem cap. If you are sure you have the stem pushed down as tight as possible when you bolted it on, and it is still loose, you can saw off an inch or two from the steer tube, and it will get tight. If your headset is broken, then you do need a new one. 1 1/8"
