Does anyone know of a good resource to help me refurbish my bicycle?
I am pretty handy in the shop but don't know how to clean rust of the frame and aluminum parts and such. I'd love to get some new parts (Brakes, derailleurs wheels) but where can I find parts that will fit? It is a Benotto from the early 80's, Suntour components. Thanks!
A Dremel multi-tool with a wire wheel attachment will work best at removing surface rust and corrosion, but don't attempt to grind away at deeply pitted areas. You may damage and weaken the tubing, rendering the bike unsafe.
You can certainly upgrade the bike to any trim level you desire. Bikes have not changed all that much since the early 1980s. You will be able to find brakes, handlebars, seatposts, and powertrain components at any merchant such as Bike Nashbar or Performance Bicycle. However, you may have a problem with the rear wheel. Your bike probably has a 126mm axle spacing. Almost all road wheels sold now are set up for a 130mm spread. You can use a newer wheel - and you will have to with the newer 9- and 10-speed rear cogsets - on a 126mm frame, but you will need to take out some spacers from the rear axle and have the wheel redished. This will be easier on a conventional, hand built wheel - one that's built up from a hub, rim, and spokes, than on a "wheel system" that's prefabricated.
