El Bassetto Encantador de Sardinia
Antonella and Guido live in Loiri in Porto San Paolo, one step from Olbia, which is one of the most popular places to stay in Sardinia. They run Agriturismo l'Aglientu, which is a nice Agriturismo olbia costa smeralda in a special position not far from the most beautiful beaches in the north-eastern Sardinia coast.
An amazing landscape, clean air, food grown in the farm Ortolandia, the sea breeze: your two Basset Hounds seem very happy and in good health ... Moreover, who would be better? It seems the best place to start a breed ...
Q:The most obvious question: What made you choose the Basset Hounds?
A: We always loved it but we spent many years with other races also very special as the Chow Chow, German Shepherd and Rottweiler, and we love it very much. Antonella however has always had great sympathy for the Basset Hound though she never could have one. Two years ago, unfortunately we lost two of ours beautiful Chows, and it was then that we have considered the idea of taking a pair of Basset Hound, to begin to breed. We wanted two Bassets coming from the most important bloodlines but also studied and reasoned in order to start working with a good basis for improving and perfecting the way of our litters. That's why we asked to a well respected breeder for Basilio, who comes from Biella (Basscott Breeding by Negro Giliola) and one of the most expert breeder and Handler for Miss Mildred (which comes from Marco Vanali in Bergamo). Both have great parents (Buffalo Hollandheim and Mirtilla De 'Andreoli for Basilio and Nhabira Highfive with Fortuna Sfacciata for Miss Mildred) with a number of champions between their relatives in their excellent bloodlines. The result is already remarkable for our couple, but with love we want to improve and correct the weaknesses already from the first litters. We were really lucky, not all novice breeders could start with so beautiful beginners. When our two little friends went for the first time in our house they earned a special place in our hearts, with their tenderness. The most extraordinary is that Basilio and Milly speak, with eyes, tail, with gestures, with feet, ears, the whole body. The mimicry of a Basset Hound is unique, no other dog can reach the Basset experience in communication!
Q: How will you proceed with your small breed in Sardinia? What are the features you would like to develop in your litters?
A: Our experience with other dogs has taught us much in terms of "technical" and we've already clear what has to be improved through the study of genetics. With the help of our friends breeders we will find the most appropriated blood lines to our Bassets, to correct and improve our already excellent "base" starting grow here in Sardinia a good and respectable Basset Hound family. Every day we learn to better know the qualities of our dogs and mistakes to avoid. We think that the Basset Hound should return to reflect the qualities for which it was selected: this is a dog who loves working in the country, it loves to be helpful and if it is not totally lazy and relaxed like it looks. It's a hound, and the whole construction of his body reveals it in the best subjects in our opinion. That's why we prefer the big boned Basset Hound, but agile, a basset who can run and work even in the most inaccessible places without being too much affected by the weight and excess of skin. We think that the Basset Hound is not made to sit on the sofa (though he loves it...) but to stay outdoors following the tracks before returning to his comfortable nest to be cuddle by his human friends! In any case, the most important thing to look for in a dog is the harmony, the elegance of posture, secure and agile movement, as well as the physical setting correctness.
Q: I know you are very careful of feeding your dogs, in fact, they always have a beautiful coat: any suggestions for our friends? A: Because of its tendency to be very greedy, vigilance is needed, as we run a B&B in Sardinia, our Bassets are living in a constantly frequented by foreign tourists place who tend to continuously give them food: we only give them the best quality croquettes, prepared with fish and vegetables with garlic, which is good and detoxifies. We found a good company that produces in small amounts but is sensitive to the quality of ingredients. The cost of the product is apparently higher, in fact, you can give them half. We do not use sausage pieces or similar, if your dogs deserve a reward, a little piece of cheese would be great. Above all, no sweets or fats because the skin and stomach of the Basset Hound would suffer! (And our noses). The only exception to the rule, dry bread in small doses, fruits and vegetables.
