Any additional tips / help for fixing up old an old bicycle?

Found an older road bike and want to restore it up a bit. I have heard...
steel wool and metal polish to remove rust.
WD40 for tight chain or freewheel.
Regular soap and water for dirt.
Adjust brakes and tighten bolts.
Check tires and tubes.

WD40 is fine to free up a chain, but immediately that chain needs some real lubricant which WD40 does not provide. Keep it away from the freewheel, it will wash away any lubricant that remains inside. If derailleur and brake cables are rusty, replace them along with the housings, a broken brake cable is an accident in the making. Wheels should be trued, and bearings in the hubs and bottom bracket should be replaced and re packed with fresh grease
