Be Sporty Skateboarding Tips - Stances And Your Skateboard

You're not alone - everyone sucks at skateboarding the first time they try it. You'll find some skaters who catch on to the basics in no time at all. Other skaters require more time to get used to balance, feel, and the particular motions of skating. Every new skateboarder is taught tips and tricks to help make the learning process easier. Cool. Ok, read the following to learn a few tips for buying your first skateboard and head-out to skate on your own.

Please try to use the proper equipment. It can feel awkward to wear the safety gear: elbow/knee pads, helmut, shin guards. But - when you first start out, it won't take long to thank yourself for wearing them. But you will discover your travel time will be less than your recovery time. Just like it was when you learned to ride that bike. Learning how to stop properly will put you through your share of tumbles and you'll probably have more than a few scrapes and bruises by the time you learn to successfully travel from point A to point B without falling. Eventually, you'll probably stop wearing so much safety gear - but the helmut is really a good idea to keep wearing. You'll really want to protect your head in case anything happens and you fall.

Ok, when you want to turn - shift your weight in the right direction and hold your balance the best you can.

But that doesn't mean you're leaning with your whole body to the front or back. The goal is to simply shift your weight from the flat of your foot to the balls of your feet, or to the heels of your feet. And your body remains upright and there's no swaying back/forth. You just might take a fall if you lean/sway too much. Find an uncrowded surface that's flat and even. Don't practice sharp turns yet, start out with wide and gentle turns to help you get a feel for how to shift your weight on your feet. Once you get that mastered, you can practice lifting the front of your board a little bit to allow you to turn more sharply.

Figure out how you want to stand on your skateboard. Skaters use a variety of stances for different kinds of skating situations. Probably the best thing is to get on your board and stand still on it. Find a comfortable standing position (one that you can hold for a while without wobbling and that doesn't start to hurt). Ok, so then you just need to know how you'll be pushing-off to gain and keep your speed. So then you try to push-off without needing to go fast/far. There are different types of pushing off, but for now find a way that feels comfortable and that won't send you sprawling.

The basics can seem hard, but only if you don't put the practice into them. It took the pros years to skate like that. Take it slow so you can learn control. Remember, if the board controls you, then you just may get hurt.
