What is the difference between normal, drilled, slotted, ventilated disc brakes? What are the best?
A "simple" (I assume you mean solid) rotor is just that. A solid piece of cast iron. In the early days of systems more disc brake rotors were solid. Today solid rotors are usually only on the rear axle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Disk_brake_dsc03682.jpg vented rotors are thicker, but hollow in the center with fins and vents to allow heat to dissipate. More vented rotors are standard or less on the front brakes and are often used in high performance vehicle in the rear brakes. Cross-drilled rotors or rotors are standard ventilation solids that have holes drilled through the surface of the rotor. This technology started in the races but from the late 90's it became fashionable among people rice-boy street. Many people think cross drilling helps dissipate heat, but the evidence to support this is the best mixed. It was actually developed for racing applications in late 1960 as a way to vent gases between the brake pad and rotor surface. In addition, cross drilling the rotor makes a little lighter. For street use is made exclusively for the car owner because he thinks it more attractive. There is no practical performance advantage. Slotting is the same purpose, except that instead of a series of small holes in a long series of grooves cut into the surface of the rotor. Some people just can not get enough and have rotors that are drilled and slotted. For street driving the brakes that came with the car are far beyond adequate.
