Campagnolo 13/29 cassette really slow. 11/25 chorus cassette a good replacement?
I am new to biking. I like my giant but one problem. It has a compact crank and a 13/29 cassette. All campy chorus. Well I find pedeling many rpm in my fastest gear. Will an 11/25 or 11/29 be a good replacement or will that just defeat the purpose of the compact. For example, say I participate in a ride...losing speed I could have had on the downhills. Is the 13/29 ideal for rides or races?
Several things to consider.
First, you want a 'higher' gear to allow a lower cadence when you want to go fast. You therefore want a smaller rear cog than your present 13 tooth. A 12 or 11 is logical, but choosing which depends on how much harder you want to work in your "big gear" ... 8% or 15%
The second thing is how low a gear you need for hills. The 29 tooth cog you have now is useful if you are not super strong and have some good hills in the area. On the other hand if you are strong and/or don't have big hills you can safely consider a smaller "big" rear cog. Again, how much smaller is something you should consider.
The third thing is how many gears you have and how best to distribute these. In other words, if you have a 8 cogs you can choose a cassette (assuming you can find it) that distributes these over a narrow (e.g. 11/21), intermediate (11/25) or wide range (11/29). The narrow range gives you much narrower steps between gears making it easier to find just the right gear (but limited by the extremes).
This is why technology has slowly moved from 5 speed to 10 (or more) gears on a cassette ... more gears allows for maximum range AND narrow distribution. That said, you have to make a choice based on your current drivetrain (unless you want to get into major $$).
I suggest you consider the above, take your type of riding and local terrain into account, define the options for alternate cassette setups and (maybe) play around with the calculator at the link. You should be able to choose fairly easily then.
