Canary Yacht Charter
The name of the Canary Islands is probably derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning Island of Dogs. It believes that a dense population of fierce dogs, like the Presa Canario, inhabited the island of Gran Canaria during the Roman era.
Before European settlement villages similar to North African Berbers inhabited the islands. They became known as the Guanches, although Guanches was originally the name of the indigenous inhabitants of Tenerife.
In 1402, the Spanish conquest of the islands began with an expedition to the island of Lanzarote. From there, they conquered Fuerteventura and El Hierro and established a base on the island of La Gomera, but it would be many years before the island was truly conquered. The natives of La Gomera and Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma, resisted the Spanish invaders for almost a century.
The Canary Islands were then a source of dispute between Spain and other European powers. The attack serious took place in 1599 when a Dutch fleet of 74 ships and 12,000 men, attacked the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Dutch then laid siege to the city but eventually left the site of Las Palmas and withdrew.
Another notable attack occurred on July 25, 1797, when a British fleet in the future Admiral Lord Nelson attacked Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The British were repulsed losing nearly 400 men. It was in this battle that Nelson lost his right arm.
Rivalry among elites in the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the capital of the island led to the division of the archipelago into two provinces in 1927. This has not remained the rest of the rivalry between the two cities, which continues to this day.
The distinctive features of the Canary Islands are its high in relation your area. In fact, the Teide volcano on Tenerife is the highest mountain in Spain, and the third largest volcano on Earth. When the prevailing wind, the NE offices, meet the high mountains, the moisture condenses and the windward side of the islands to see a good amount of rain. This explains the diversity in the Canary Islands pine forest on sand dunes, green valleys of the north, hot and dry desert in the south. According to the position of the islands with respect to the trade winds, weather may be mild and wet or too dry.
The Canary Islands economy is based primarily on tourism, nearly 10 million visitors each year, representing 32% of GDP. construction accounts for nearly 20% of the GDP and tropical agriculture, primarily bananas and snuff, are produced for export markets. Tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cochineal, sugarcane, grapes, vines, dates, oranges, lemons, figs, wheat, barley, corn, apricots, peaches and almonds also grown.
There are several airports in the Canary Islands can easily reach all major cities of Europe or America. Canary Islands are a letter from sailing all year round and yachts.
On your yacht charter in the Canary Islands have the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, turtles and flying fish.
Canary's geographical position means that there is generally good winds for sailing. Northeast trades who once had America Columbus funnel through the creation of islands known as wind acceleration zones and this means that even with fairly light winds there is still enough wind for a large.
Despite its position near the tropics, the Canaries are not too hot in summer, 21-29 ° C, comfortably warm in winter, 15 at 20 ° C, and may be regarded as an area year-round yacht. Storms are rare and the islands affected by hurricanes.
The seven main islands in the Canary Islands are well spaced so that only a day's sail between most of them.
The greatest variety of facilities for yachts are in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has a marina operated by the Port Authority. south coast of Gran Canaria has several marinas good in Pasito Blanco, Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan. Facilities are set out in all of them, as well as the fishing port of Arguineguin. Other ports include Agaete and Amfi del Mar.
berthing facilities in the capital of Tenerife have improved dramatically with the opening of the Marina de Santa Cruz in the heart of the city of Santa Cruz. A small marina Tenerife operates in the fishing port. Out of Santa Cruz there are good facilities at marinas in Radazul, Los Gigantes and Puerto Colon. The shipyard Los Cristianos has also toured the facilities and repairs. There are also ports in Candelaria and San Miguel.
Lanzarote has two marinas: Puerto Calero and Marina Rubicon. Both have yards and a range of services. There are also ports in Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen
Fuerteventura is a small marina with distance and waiting some repair shops and fuel in El Castillo and the limited possibilities of repair in the capital Puerto del Rosario. Other ports are Corralejo and Morro.
La Gomera is 28 ° north of Ecuador in the subtropics, which give the island a very pleasant average temperatures of 21 degrees in winter and 28 degrees in summer. The island still retains the character of the Canary Islands and neighboring biggest difference is not suffering from mass tourism, although it is only a short drive from main Tenerife (Sur) airport.
The center of San Sebastian, the capital of La Gomera, has changed little since Columbus's fleet was anchored in the bay. Torre del Conde, the Church of the Assumption, where members of the expedition were blessed with the Pozo de la Aguada - which was drawn the water, which he named United States, have survived to this day. San Sebastian now has its own marina, located in the northern part of the commercial port. There is also a port of Vueltas or Valle Gran Rey.
La Palma has a marina and port Tazacorte.
El Hierro has a marina and there are ports of La Restinga and Puerto Stake.
