Buying Vacuum Cleaners And Where Should You Buy Your Next One?
The basic choices in buying a vacuum cleaner are buying from a local independent dealer, a chain store, a franchise, a discount store or online.
The question you need to ask yourself is...will these people service what they sell, and how will they do that? If you are buying from a chain store, ask them how you get service on your vacuum cleaner. If they don't service what you buy, there is no advantage in buying from them.
An independent local dealer may charge a little more, but they will be able to service what they sold you, and will be able to do it quickly. Most independent dealers service what they sell in house. They do not send the vacuum cleaner out to a different business to get it serviced.
Buying online is convenient, and you will usually be able to save money. What is the return policy of the online dealer? Are they authorized dealers for what they sell. If they are not real dealers, they cannot honor the factory warranty. You should ask them if they are a real authorized dealer, or are they buying from another dealer. "Cross selling" is not permitted by most manufacturers. Your warranty would normally be voided after the non-dealer bought the machine.
Some franchises also service what they sell. If you buy from a franchise, just ask about service. A larger company in back of the local dealer will usually guarantee that you will get good service after the sale.
Chain stores also will sometimes have a real service department. Some will simply replace what you bought with a new one as long as it is still under warranty. Buying from a chain store means you are actually dealing with an employee. Usually it isn't their store, and they are happy to do anything t takes to make you happy.
The major benefit of dealing with a local brick and mortar store owned by an independent retailer...is that they will service what they sell. A hidden benefit to dealing with them is that they are knowledgeable and will show you if you are thinking of buying something that is a mistake.
That way you won't buy something that, although it saved you some money, just won't do the job you want it to do.
In my town of Wooster Ohio, we have chain stores, discount big box stores, and independent dealers. The independent dealers are the ones who will work the hardest to keep you happy with your purchase. Why? Because you are talking to the owner. It's the same everywhere in the United States.
