How many months would it take me to prepare for a sprint triathlon?
I am moderate running shape. I need a lot of help with the swimming and cycling. I do have access to a swimming pool. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to get started?
Almost anyone can do a sprint triathlon with a little preparation. How much you need depends on the specific race you're training for and your current skills.
You said swimming is an issue- how long is the swim? Can you cover that distance comfortably in a pool? Is there a "surf entry" start (where you have to get past a wave break)? Most first timers are most freaked out by the swim, but with a little preparation it's probably not going to be a problem. Find a masters group at a local pool. If you need help with your stroke mechanics, a few sessions with a coach specializing in triathletes will be well worth it. Practicing with bad form just gets you more bad form. You can muscle your way through the bike and the run- the swim is mostly technique.
The bike is usually the longest portion of the race, both by distance and time. Knowing how to ride well will make your race much more enjoyable. Practice on the same kind of course your race will be on (flat, hilly, etc.). Also, take time to familiarize yourself with the bike rules- especially the "ride on the right, pass on the left" rule. It will help keep you and the other athletes from getting into an accident.
In my opinion, the best single thing you could do is find a triathlon club in your area. Through them you should be able to locate groups to swim, ride and run with, coaches, and help with things like transitions and race day logistics.
