What is flex tree and what are your thoughts on it?
I'm considering buying a flex tree saddle for my boyfriend and his horse. He has a lovely stocky App cross. I'm not sure if this is important but he is a little over 200 pounds. I've heard they don't work well for bigger guys. I'm looking for information and feedback on whether flex trees are liked or dislike by the majority and why/why not.
He'll be trail riding and learning how to ride in it.
A flex tree is nothing more than a saddle made with a tree created out of material that allows flexion of the tree. Usually a polymer based (plastic) tree.
The theory is that the tree will adapt to the horse's needs as well as the rider's weight and make and how the rider rides.
I have sold a number of the saddles to people for trail riding, they love them, but I've never owned one myself.
If a person is going to take part in something like roping or will be putting a load on the saddle for any reason, a flex tree isn't what you want. For example, a rope tied to the horn and dallied to a steer is going to jerk the tree and twist it which would likely injure the horse's back.
I have not heard that such trees should be limited to a certain weight. I know people that have got to be over 200 lbs that use them.
My opinion is not yet fully formed on them - I feel that a rigid tree which fits the horse well is a better option. Additionally, if a person had a flex tree saddle and sells it to someone else, unless that person does their homework to ensure they know what kind of tree the saddle is and how it should be used, subsequent owners could be using a flex tree for something they shouldn't not knowing they even have one.
If you can imagine being a horse and having a heavy tool placed upon your back which may have pressure points that move too much, it might not be the best thing for you. No matter what saddle you are looking at, ensure it fits the horse properly before considering the rider.
