The history of the rear view mirror originated in 1906. In the book named "The woman and the Car" by Dorothy Levitt, it is mentioned that women should "carry a little hand mirror in a convenient place when driving so they may hold the mirror aloft from time to time in order to see behind while driving in traffic." In 1911 Ray Harroun mounted a rear view mirror on his vehicle at The Indianapolis 500. Elmer Berger is credited with the development of the rear view mirror for use in street going vehicles.
Rear view mirrors are not used in isolation. Since the rear view could get obstructed due to the boot of the vehicle there is the need to use it in conjunction with the side mirrors that are attached to the sides of the vehicle. With so many reckless drivers on the road it is up to each one to protect themselves from potentially fatal accidents. The rear view mirror goes a long way in assisting in this by helping the driver to see what is behind him at any given time.
The rear view mirror is now quite high tec. They are auto dimming so that the glare of light from vehicles at the back does not hit the driver in the face. These mirrors are fixed with photo sensors that detect the light and dim the mirror. The prismatic rear view mirror can be tilted to a comfortable position where the brightness and glare does not affect the driver at night. These are also known as a day / night mirror.
There are bicycles too that are equipped with the rear view mirror. The reasoning behind it is that it is possible for the cyclist to view what is behind him without the need to turn his head behind and lose sight of the movement of traffic in the front.
Identity theft is becoming a serious problem. In order to prevent anyone looking over the shoulder and gathering sensitive information the rear view mirror is fixed at ATM's.
The rear view mirror looks like it is of no importance but the functions that it performs is of immense value
