gear cable?
i have tightened up the cable on the rear of my saracen i flick through the gears and all seems fine but when i flick back teh cable is slack again any ideas?
Sounds like one of 3 things to me, and one of them is in the answer above.
The second possibility is that the cable is either kinked or frayed. Make sure that there are no extreme bends in the housing and that the inner cable is in good condition.
The last possibility is that the derailleur or shifter is hanging up somewhere or there is a damaged return spring. This is very uncommon unless the bike experienced a crash or abuse... even then it is rare.
EDIT: If the bike is less than 5 years old it is very unlikely that cable lubrication is the culprit. Virtually any decent bike has teflon sleeves inside that preclude the need for lubrication. In fact, if some solvent based lube is used (like WD40) it could soften the teflon and make the cable stick more! Assuming that the bike is clean and reasonably cared for, lubrication of the derailleurs and shifters is not necessary since most have nylon or oil impregnated bushings in the pivots. Of course, if the bike is subject to extremes lube should be added, and it is an integral part of a tune up or overhaul.
