maintenance of a shimano alivio hydraulic disc brakes?
hi guys i just bought a shimano alivio set, this is my first time to use a hydraulic disc brake. first i need some tips on its maintenance and what is the exact fluid do i have to put on my disc brakes every time i change it. and i wonder what is the purpose of the yellow plastic chip that comes with the caliper kit sorry because i haven't yet installed it. thanks for your tips and advice!
You'll use the brake fluid called for in the instructions, most often its just regular automotive brake fluid. As far as maintenance goes there isn't any with hydraulic brakes other than an occasional check on pad wear as they are self-adjusting. The fluid usually doesn't need to be changed once installed unless there's a leak or other problem. The yellow plastic pieces are spacers used when the pads are removed to prevent the piston from coming completely out of the caliper bore. If, when you have the pads out for replacement, someone were to squeeze the brake lever without the spacer in place the piston could come completely out of the caliper creating a real headache to get it back in.
One other point is that the only solution to use to clean the discs is alcohol, never a petroleum product which will ruin your pads.
