Electric Bicycle !Has anyone had experience with the new (V2) Elation ebike kit ?
I have had little exposure to this kit. Maybe some of my ramblings might be of some help.
The part of the kit that I am most interested in is the freewheeling chain rings (front cogs). Version 2 looks a bit more refined and durable. This is the clever part of the kit that allows the chain rings to be driven by the motor even if the rider isn't pedaling (all gears available.) This part is bound to be useful in some other projects. (only square taper though ??? )
The motor drive also freewheels allowing the bike to be ridden normally with the motor switched off. (minimal extra effort)
The other main change for version 2 is the use of an improved brushless motor. It looks suspiciously similar to the one that cyclone supply in their kits. If so, then this should prove to be a positive. The cyclone motor has a particularly good reputation.
lifep04 batteries are a sensible choice in terms of recharge life weight and performance. I have some experience with various battery types and these would be my choice for this application.
My only criticism of the kit is it is probably a little too good. Electric bicycles are the way, quite a few people are introduced to cycling. Fortunately most electric bikes have terrible range and speed. Many moderately trained cyclists can give an electric bike a run for its money in terms of speed and blow them to the weeds for range.
It may be a bit more difficult to entice someone using this kit, to give up the assistance and start riding a standard bike.
