Low rise vs. mid rise handlebar for my mtb?
Hey all. I want to replace my handlebars with a mid rise EA 50 Easton Monkey Bar for my Specialized Hardrock. Are low rise bars better for mountain bikers?
Thanks!
There really isnt a "better"... they each have their place and will provide a different advantage.
First off, and just for the record, you need to recognize that you're talking about the difference between a 10-15mm rise and a 20-25mm rise when talking about low vs medium risers. That means we're talking about maybe a half an inch difference total... that isnt going to provide you with a radically different cockpit feel siting on your bike pedaling around whichever way you go.
Now, where bar height makes the biggest difference is in cornering. Modern suspension bikes, particularly downhill and freeride bikes, have very slack angles to make them more stable at speed and over extreme terrain. Unfortunatley, this also means that there's less weight on the front end than with steeper angles which leads to less traction when cornering. By putting on a low rise stem and a low rise bar, you can put more weight on the front end and enhance your cornering traction. This is essentially the same concept that's behind things like zero-stack headsets... getting more weight over the front end.
Now, with that being said... your hardrock doesnt have the types of steep angles that would necessitate a low rise for handling purposes so it becomes really just a question of comfort and style. With that in mind, a high rise on the bar allows for a more upright and comfortable seating position on the bike so I'd recommend going with a higher rise as opposed to a lower one. Keep in mind though, on your particularly bike, the difference will be only minimally noticeable so you really dont have much to worry about.
