How far "off road" can I take my Compass 4WD?
Some friends and I are planning a camping trip (haven't decided where yet) and I was wondering if anyone can tell me from experience what the off-road limits of my car are. It handles decently on the beach but would it be ok to take into muddy places or steep inclines? I don't want to get stuck somewhere.
I wouldn't try too much with it, but I bet it will surprise you with what it will make it through. Last fall I had to drive my wife's Equinox up for a hunting trip and it snowed like crazy for 2 days. The "road" (two track sort of logging road, sort of snowmobile trail) was 3 to 6 inches of mud, with standing water on top, then 6 to 10 inches of snow on the ground. I beat the crap out of that equinox and it took it all and still ran 80 mph all the way home. One point on the road was so flooded and mucked up i had to back up and hit it about 35 to 40 mph and force through it, the car got slowed down to about 20 or less, but it never got stuck. The tires on it were about worn out also (3 to 4/32 left) and were due to be replaced before winter.
