How to Look After Your Bicycle Chain
How to keep your chain clean and lubricated is a debatable subject. I've read various theories and descriptions on how to do it or even whether to do it. If you really want to fill your brain up with all the interesting theories on this subject, read "Sheldon Brown's Chain Maintenance" article which can be found easily on Sheldon Brown's website. The below are a few tips that you won't find on that website but are some simple ideas that don't take up much time or energy. This is going on the basis that you would like to clean your chain when it is very dirty, very dry or is making noise. I will also go over how to know when to replace your chain, which is not as debatable and very important so you don't mess up your whole drivetrain.
How to Clean Your Chain?
When your chain needs cleaning, you first want to shift your chain down to the smallest rear sprocket. Hold the chain still and use a rag that is soaked in solvent to wipe the dirt and dust off the chain. You will need to keep moving the chain backwards until you have cleaned the entire chain with your rag. Clean the front chainrings and also take time to clean between the rear sprockets with the rag.
How to Lubricate Your Chain?
First shift the chain into the middle sprocket on both the front and rear. Lubricate the chain's interior circumference on the side that is facing the sprockets along the top of the lower run of the chain. Move your chain backwards and keep dropping lubricant into both sides of your rollers.
Now shift through all the gears to make sure the oil spreads through the whole drivetrain. Use a rag to wipe off the excess. Remember that you are not going to need very much oil so go easy on the lubrication as the oil will expand.
How to Know if Your Chain Needs Replacing?
This is not hard. You can use a tool called a Chain Checker but you can also use a simple ruler which I personally recommend (I'm a minimalist by nature). Take your ruler and place the '0' inch mark above the center of one of your chain pins. Then count out twelve complete links. By complete link I mean one inner and one outer. If your chain is fine and dandy, your chain will line up exactly with the twelve inch mark using this ruler method. But if your chain is between 1/16" & 1/8" past its mark, you should look at getting a new chain. And if it is greater than 1/8" past the mark, you will need to replace not only your chain but also your rear sprockets. This is because as your chain stretches, it tends to stretch the sprockets as well. Eventually this will result in your chain slipping which may already be happening when your chain is put under pressure.
The key is to keep the chain lasting as long as possible but realize that eventually you will need to replace it. Chains don't last forever, and if you replace it early enough, you won't need to replace parts of your drivetrain at the same time.
