what type of bike should i buy?
im planing on cycling from scarborough (north yorkshire England) to Glandore, (Cork Ireland) the journey is about 500 miles and im planing on doing it in summer next year (in my gap year from college) and i wasn't sure what type of bike to get. obviously a road bike would be best but would a Hybrid be almost as good or maybe just a good mountain bike with road Tyre's. i need to be able to carry panniers with clothes and other items in. also can any one give me any information on this length of bike ride and any suggestions of a good bike to get.
Any decent road bike will help those miles seem A LOT shorter. They will handle the panniers, etc. just fine, and will move the miles along faster. This is assuming, of course that the roads are decent where you are going. Lugging all that gear over a bunch of trails wouldn't be too much fun anyway.
I would recommend a good bike, but don't blow an excessive amount of money- or preferably buy used. Get something with enough quaility to last the trip and keep things rolling very smoothly, but nothing you are too concerned about scuffing the paint- or carbon fiber- on. This trip will likely include some scuffing 
Also, google "sizing a road bike" and you'll find tons of resources. I saw a great link for this on a thread in this category as well.
