What is the BMX Front Piece Under the Handlebars Called?
Just like where the traditional Raleigh Bikes logo would've gone. What is this part of the bike called?
NOT THE STEM. The cylindrical shape at the front of the frame, underneath the stem and the bars.
headtube, I'd just like to add that there are different types of headset/headtube set ups
Integrated- currently really popular, it is where the headtube is machined to form the cups for the bearings, which give it a flush look, some say less weight (I say who cares it doesn't make much difference) and they're really easy to install-just pop the bearing in, put the top of the headset on, then cone (although I've seen some where the cone and top are one piece). then tighten down your stem making sure its doesn't wiggle but moves smoothly and there you go. Negatives are that if you have a problem with the machined cups, then you might have to buy an entire new frame, and (as the Chris King website explains) integrated headsets rest in an awkward angle that puts pressure at an angle that can make it less smooth and weaker (I have seen probably seven or so integrated headsets break in the past year, but I've only seen two or three standard headsets break like that.
"standard"-older style headset, unlike integrated you have to install cups for the bearings to go into which can be a huge headache if you don't have the right tools, especially since getting any dings in it can make the bearings grind against the cup and make your cups basically useless.
Internal-internal headsets actually have headsets that are entirely inside the headtube. Internal headsets are rarely, if ever, used for rougher riding like mountain biking or bmx, but are used mostly for bmx racing and I personally have seen quite a few flatland bmxers with them for some reason, but I think that's not really a common thing.
there are other types of headtubes and headsets but those are the main one's now, there's also the old school threaded headsets which screw into the frame and almost always have a gooseneck that screws into the fork rather than a stem the clamps around the fork (steerer tube), which you will still see all over the place on cheaper and older bikes, and when I started riding standard headsets were usually called "threadless". I also saw some old ad for threaded headsets, so I would guess they probably had something similar but that didn't screw. and of course if you want to go really far back to draisines aka hobby horses, they didn't have headsets at all, they didn't even have chains or tires. They were completely made of wood, including the wheels, spokes, everything. I have no idea what some of the velocipedes with headsets had but I would guess that the first were probably just very well oiled shafts until they could afford ball bearings.
I know you probably weren't looking for that much info, but oh well, hopefully it interests someone.
