How should I prepare for my first 52km road cycling competition of 9 meandering and undulating laps?
Its hot humid tropical climate here, and the race shall be held in the late morning. My road bike has got 52/45T chainrings and 12-23T cassette, hyration kit for 1.5litres of isotonic drink. Should I use my present 20-622 (F) and 23-622 (R) tire?
Your rubber is fine. Your gearing is fine (if you have a mostly flat course). Don't wear new shoes, new shorts, new gloves, or anything new that you haven't trained in. Biggest mistake of new racers is using new stuff in a race that they haven't broken in.
Keep your cool and ride your line. The adrenaline rush of a first-time race can get you all excited before the race, and then you experience an energy let-down half way through. Stay cool, stay focused on YOUR race, and break out the adrenaline rush in the final sprint.
The next best advice is make sure you eat. Too many riders think they can "load up" before a race and not take on any nutrients during the race. Big mistake. Its hard to eat during a race and the gel packs of energy food make it easier but you have to take on nutrients while racing.
