4 month weaning!!!!!!!!??
Bet you all saw the question and have clicked on ready to have a go at me ......well listen first. My son is 16 weeks old weighs 18lb this is whats happening. For a few weeks now he has been refusing feeds ( formula ) the doc checked him said he is fine and to carry on as i am. it is getting ridiculous he screams for a bottle then after a couple of sips he refuses it i have tried calpol teething gel syringing it in you name it i have tried it. the only way he will eat is if i get him to sleep and sneak his dummy out and replace with a bottle. so i saw my hv had him weighed and his weight has plateued (not sure about spelling) he constanly eating his hands so anyway shesaid to start to wean him he has lost his tongue reflex but as soon as the food is in his mouth he gags and sicks up everything he has eaten all day i dont know what to do please help this is my 3rd and i am completely baffled
I think you need to try and find out why he is refusing the bottle - even though it's ok to start weaning under advice at this age (although his behaviour suggests he might not be quite ready), your sons diet should still be mostly formula for quite a long time yet.
Things that might make him refuse...
temperature of bottle
formula brand
type of bottle
wind
constipation
If you can think of anything else, add it to the list and try to rule them out one at a time.
What are his poos like - if they are on the dry side he might need extra water or easy digest formula. Can you think of anything at all that has changed recently, no matter how small? Are there any clues in his behaviour when you try to feed him?
My son used to start screaming during feeds, and the clue for us was that he seemed to be straining, and would eventually produce a little trump before finally calming down. Being fed was prompting him to try and have a clear out, but he had trapped wind and constipation so it was hurting him!
Is it baby rice you are giving him at the moment? I presume you're making it up with formula - is there any room to make it a bit runnier? It's so easy to make it that bit too thick, but if he hasn't got the technique yet he'll struggle unless it's really thin.
Hope you get it sorted, I know it's horrible when you can't work out what's wrong.
