If i use a single speed crank on the left hand side of a tandem as a sync system will the pedals come off?
I want to convert my tandem to have a triple chain ring on the back. I can't do this at the moment because the sync chain and the primary drive chain are on the same side.
I don't want to spend loads of money on a special set of tandem cranks.
Can I use 2 sets of single speed cranks at front and back with the chain ring on the left, and then another crank with a triple chain ring for the back right.
The problem I see would be the threading on the pedals on the left hand side of the bike would be going the wrong way. If I used some thread locker is this a big deal?
I mean the pedals might come off, not the cranks. They will be put on with square tapers like yours.
Our Santana has the setup you envision, but the bottom bracket shaft has square ends. The cranks push onto that and are screwed in place (triple on the right and single on the left) that way thread direction doesn't come into it.
Given the forces involved I highly doubt any type of thread lock would work on a threaded bottom bracket axle.
EDIT: Got you ..! Good question. My guess is the pedals would stay on if "locked" and tightened well. If I had the cranks already I'd be tempted to try it, but if I had to buy the cranks I'd get ones designed for the left side (reverse thread). Before doing it I'd try talking to an impartial person who really knows tandems ... like maybe someone at Santana or Burley. Good luck
