1999 Escort Sport: Floor shift is stuck?
My 1999 Ford Escort Sport gets stuck in park. When I push the brakes, the lights DO come on. I have been bypassing the "thumb" button with the little hole in the floor next to the shifter but I would like to know if anybody has a ball park what it costs to fix, I have been laid off and I NEED my car to find a job, but, without a job, its hard to pay to fix it..lol Somebody told me it could be the solenoid in the shifter, any ideas how much for that?
Things that can cause this problem are: blown fuse to the brake lights (not your problem,) bad switch at the brake pedal, bad switch at the shifter. When you push your brake do you hear something move in your shifter? If not the problem probably is one of the switches, or the wiring in between. If you do hear a noise then you probably have the same problem we had with our car (97 tracer basically the same as yours.) It originated because of a short in a brake light wire that blew the fuse. The car was put in gear using the bypass and driven home. I fixed the short, but it did not fix the shifter problem. This was because the mechanism got damaged when the button was bypassed. I opened up the cover and bent things back into shape and it works fine.
Replacement of the solenoid switch is not a big deal, if you are handy do it yourself. Autozone.com has free repair manuals online which diagram the shifter for you.
